NGC1313 - Chile

NGC1313 – Chile

A very disturbed galaxy. It lies abut 13 million ly away. Its somewhat of a puzzle since there are no nearby galaxies which could have caused its widespread chaotic condition. There is evidence of it having swallowed a couple of dwarf galaxies, which are responsible for some bright blue regions clustered in the extremities of its arms. However, nothing of any size in the neighborhood that accounts for its overall chaotic appearance.

The neutral hydrogen in its outer part is also disturbed (brown regions). Additionally it has a massive dark matter halo around it.
