SH2-312 is the last object in Stewart Sharpless’s catalogue of 312 objects north of -27 deg.It is sometimes called the Pyxis nebula.
SH2-312 is enormous and this image covers only a part of it. Here we can see the leading edge, which looks like a wall with the steep drop
off in light. The overall appearance of the nebula section shown here has been described as looking like a waterfall.
There is a very small galaxy showing through on the upper right side. It is listed as NGC2488 and lies about 10 million ly away.
