Often called the “Meat Hook Galaxy” this very active spiral lies about 50 million ly away. Note the bottom arm, where wide spread emission activity is taking place. The arm is not only disturbed but hooked in appearance. This most likely traces to the gravitational effect of the smaller galaxy on the right. The galaxy was discovered visually by John Herschel who included in his notes the line – “I think it has some sort of hooked appendage”.
