BFS-1 – Chile

BFS-1 is the small, ultra-compact HII nebula right in the center of the image. It lies directly between the Triffid and Lagoon Nebulas but is apparently unrelated to both. Most of the nebulosity in this area in Sagittarius lies at a distance of 5-10,000 ly away. This little nebula is much further out.

BFS stands for “Blitz, Fich and Stark”. They cataloged 65 distant HII regions that are located in the outer galaxy.

A close examination of the image shows a compact, somewhat doughnut shaped nebula. Its color appears to have less blue in it
than the surrounding regions of nebulosity.

There is some speculation that it is a supernova remnant.
